A Post In the Machine.
A little bit of TV, film, books, music, a road trip down Highway 1, a summer trip (shocker: to Portland) plus some thoughts on the death of social media and the newborn life of physical media.
I’m about to watch a lot more television. On vacation. (Or as someone said to me: “Vacation from what?”) I don’t mind working on vacation because, as I’m prone to say, it’s not like I’m breaking rocks. I’m watching a screen or reading.
So I’ll finish “The Bear.” I’ll eagerly start the new “Justified.” I will even more eagerly start the latest “Black Mirror.” Partner: “I lot of people are talking bad about it online.” Me: “I only trust myself.”
I will continue all the “Still Watching…” bits mentioned here:
I think it’s important to add, while I remember it, that I talked to my wine guru and friend Dan about that scene in “Drops Of God” that I was dubious about and, once properly explained, he said — as I thought he might! — well, actually, yeah that’s a thing. It’s not ideal, but it’s a thing that’s done. So, there you go — I have zero issues with “Drops Of God” (Apple TV+) since that one (unexplained to you) scene was my only caveat. Definitely watch. (I keep adding, “But only if you love wine” and have since heard back from people who are saying, “I liked it and I don’t really favor wine.” My response remains: It’s only as surprisingly great as I think it is if you love drinking wine and are voraciously interested in it. Otherwise the show is just really good.
Can’t lose, really.
OK, onward with the vacation viewing talk:
I will add in some movies (“Oppenheimer” for sure, and no, not “Barbie”). I will probably start the “Deep Dive: BritBox” feature, even though there’s countless more for me to discover on Netflix via that feature (as they say: why not both?).
I’ve got two secret retro shows I’m going to watch. I have decided that now is the time to stop putting off “Severance.” On and on and on. Then writing about it.
Basically, two people who love TV and movies and reading will be having a two-week-plus period of chilling in Portland, eating, drinking and coming home to almost no responsibilities except gorging on entertaining things. Being away, even if it’s not very far, is a break from distractions. Should be fertile for posts.
