Deep Dive: BritBox.
First up, the psychological cop series "River" and the comedy "Year of the Rabbit."
It became immediately clear to me that when I was going to expand this “Deep Dive” series beyond Netflix, the next logical choice would be BritBox, which has an endlessly deep trove of series to choose from.
What wasn’t top of mind then but became so, rather quickly, is that unlike Netflix, for viewers who subscribe to BritBox the idea of a so-called deep dive is paradoxical to their knowledge of what’s offered. At Netflix, when I scout for good looking, relatively new but obscure (and mostly international) shows you might have missed, most people feel like I’m unearthing real gems. On BritBox, with its insanely great depth, I ran immediately into the realization that our country’s Brit-centric PBS system and random cable acquisitions meant that A LOT of people had already seen the shows I was interested in.
That’s certainly not going to stop me — I haven’t seen these shows myself. But I think some of you will be thinking, “Yes, good selection, I loved every single season and can’t wait for the next.” And that’s fine, too. I still think there will be loads of people who, like me, heard about and wanted to sample some of this great UK depth, but just never found the time.
I started with 2015’s “River” because it has long been on my list of must-watch series (about damned time, I think) and series creator Abi Morgan (“The Hour,” “Iron Lady,” etc.) is a reliable favorite. I chose 2019’s “Year of the Rabbit” because it stars Matt Berry (“What We Do In the Shadows”) and is wildly, deliciously, vulgar and funny.
The “Deep Dive” feature is, of course, fully up and running and ongoing. LFG!
