The AppleTV+ limited series, written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, gets the Two Episode Test.
Voice Over: This is a Two Episode Test about “Disclaimer” which has an alarming propensity to use voice over to move the story along and shine light on back story.
That said, I have to….
Voice Over: But there are times when the voice over cheat, which is egregious, seems unnecessary in spots, as if, having gotten away with it, Cuaron decided to lean heavier on the crutch. And you wish he hadn’t. But he does. And it sounds a lot like this style of pacing.
Anyway, I’ll bet you’re thinking right now that because of the VO decisions, I won’t like “Disclaimer,” but you’re wrong, at least partly (and no I’m not going to do the italics VO schtick again).
It’s a choice that was made, I really don’t love it, but I did burn through the first two episodes pretty quickly so clearly that wasn’t enough of an issue to stop me. Two more episodes drop today (Friday).
Maybe after those, a standard “Still Watching…Or Not” check-in will be due, but one of the primary bars to clear on the Two Episode Test is getting to that third episode. And I’ll be watching Friday.
