Give Me A Movie About...Graduating.

Not so much "The Graduate," not "Animal House," probably something Greta Gerwig is in, but also maybe something so much more. Foreign? Please help.

My daughter and I rented a car on Friday and immediately headed north out of Portland and toward Seattle, where my son was graduating from the University of Washington. It would be three days of some partying with the youngs, hanging with friends — one of my best having a daughter who was also graduating from UW — many thoughts about what a seminal moment this was for my son; what the culmination of four years and the abrupt end to 16 years of structure and routine would mean for this young man, and some nostalgic backward glances remembering what it was like being on the precipice of stepping fully into the world.

And keg beer. There was keg beer.

And trying to remember what kind of energy it took to be out with friends all night, into the morning, hung over, rolling into family obligations of lunch and socializing with relatives and friends, of doing it again and again for three nights and having this kind of roman candle of happiness, sentimental tears, tons of worry about what was next (uncertainty, new and daunting expectations, no real sense of what it means to embrace adulthood and maybe no real urgency to do it either), all topped with the foreboding of a terrible world looming not just outside this bubble of celebration, but crashing right into it with massive “No Kings” protests, Middle East worries, etc.

I couldn’t help being in that moment and thinking this: I want to watch a bunch of movies that captured at least some of these moments and other emotions I haven’t even touched on. I wanted to remember (recapture?) my own — very different — graduation mood and have a multitude of stories from excellent directors float through my brain, giving me something cinematic about what this experience has been like from different people, from different countries, in different eras and national moods.
