What if at the top of a Two Episode Test about a new-ish Hulu series there was a little rant about HBO Max (yeah, I know) and how terrible its app home screen and navigation is?
This is relevant because that’s why we’re here talking about “The Other Black Girl.” I had a plan to check out what all the streamers have available that might qualify as a new-ish Two Episode Test candidate. But then, in my first choice, I encountered the insanely bad less than “Max” app with its “Max” amount of bullshit Discovery content and its “Max” amount of counter-intuitive and unhelpful suggestions that seemed to be focused on the previous decade.
I’ve known how bad that app is, trust me, but for some reason it seemed EVEN WORSE right when I wanted it to be helpful and effective at, you know, this very small task of showing me what you have to offer and why I’m paying for it. But no. There was literally a “Because You Watched ‘Barry’" section. Never mind that I’ve also watched OTHER shows and newer shows. Nope. I watched Barry at some point. That is all that matters to my personal algorithm.
“Because You Watched Barry in 2021.”
“Because You Watched The Wire.”
“Here Are Some Very Old Movies.”
“We Have New Things But We Are Not Putting Them In the Featured Tab.”
So I went to Hulu (in truth, other places first but couldn’t find anything I wanted to watch in that moment). Hulu solved the problem. “The Other Black Girl” has some buzz and a catchy little trailer going for it, plus, as a bonus, my TV was still standing, even though I wanted to destroy it because of the “Max” app.
So here we go.
