What a beautiful piece, Tim. I think it’s the best thing I’ve read on Substack. So much resonates with me. Sending love and solace for the loss of your sister. So nice that you and your partner are home-mates now. I think Flannery O’Connor changed my life bc she made me want to write. (Interestingly, the Cohen brothers went to my school (before me!) where two freshman English teachers assigned lots of O’Connor. I’m convinced she influenced their sensibility.

Elvis Costello. Just, sigh. I got to see him this summer in NYC with The Attractions, Nick Lowe, and Los Strait Jackets. You know what the encore was. ♥️

Sweet rumination, Tim. I didn’t know a new Pernice Brothers was in the pipeline, will embrace it.

Ah, I love Elvis Costello. I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times, including opening for him once back in my stand-up days. It was a painful comedic experience, because they didn't tell the audience there was going to be an opening act. But Elvis was gracious and it was cool to watch the show off-stage (he was doing a show where they would spin a big wheel and decide what song to play based on where it landed).

I haven't paid enough attention to the Pernice Brothers, but will rectify that this week with a deep dive.

Wow! Thank you for sharing. You’ve been through quite a journey.

I’ve been a fan from the days you would be a guest on KFOG and serve as a music critic wrapped up as a TV critic! You had been out go to for TV picks … if Goodman likes it then we will like it too (mostly). Lost you after S.F. Chronicle. Glad to have you back via Substack.

Love this. It’s true. Little things can change a lot about your life.

I haven’t heard of the Pernice Brothers so I have added the songs you highlighted to my playlist. I like “disconnected” music suggestions. What I mean by that is getting away from the algorithm but also even programmed radio which adheres to genre. The above gets really narrow so when I hear a song away from those channels it’s like a breath of fresh air. Really digging Clear Spot!

Great post. People say “ everything happen for a reason” . I say no, “Everything happens, we make the reason.” Such is life.
