Thanks Tim, I too had forgotten this is the second-last episode, how do they fit all this plot in? (Just as pertinent, how does Mick Herron fit so much plot into each book?) One aspect of the show (and the book) is that I really care for all of them, even Tavernier and Ho! They’re real to me.

All in all I thought the (Dame) Ingrid vs Tavner stand off could’ve been done a little better...

I’m wondering if that confrontation was different in the book...

Finale Predictions:

Marcus, Shirley, River, and Louisa are collectively about to be snuffed and at the last moment Donavan does some type of selfless act (dying in the process) that saves them...

Standish dies either saving or directly because of the actions of Sarah...

Duffy gets killed somehow...

Lamb uses that file to insulate himself and Slough House from Tavner who wins her pissing match with (Dame) Ingrid...

Other Thoughts...

Episode 5

- I’m guessing Tavner’s “confession” is only covering for an even deeper play…(at least I hope so)

- Luisa DEFINITELY understands and sympathizes Donavan’s motivations…

- I really thought Douglass was gonna be more useful…

- “Scrabble?!? Christ I did her a favor by knocking her out” I’ve never understood the appeal of Scrabble so I’m with Lamb on this one…

- They needed a bit more steam in the background when Marcus was prepping his arsenal…

1) I think the 2nd Season already established a tie between Judd and Tavener.

2) Catherine (not Louisa) idolizes Charles Partner (her old boss). Remember the coda at the end of Season 1 (and the flashbacks at the end involving Partner, Standish, and Lamb.) It may be relevant to the next episode. I know that I'll be rewatching that.

For some reason, I thought the season ended with episode five and scrambled to see if there was one episode left after I finished watching last night. Thank goodness!

I also liked Lamb’s reference to Stockholm syndrome when he finally found Standish.

Loving the Box Set, Tim. Reminds me of all your deconstructions way back to The Wire (trying to get my 21 year old son to make the time commitment. He’s got 2.5 weeks of Christmas break so that should be plenty...).

I will naturally do a rewatch of episodes 1-5 so I can try and be ready for #6.

RIP Douglas. He didn’t deserve that ending.

To your point about the former men who were in charge were most likely equally corrupt, Louisa seems to think her departed boss would never have done anything like killing one of his own.

So far, the climactic showdown in the facility is a little different from what I recall--though possibly much better, definitely more cinematic. And yes, Marcus and Shirley do wind up in the mix in the similar sequence in the book.

Curious to see how much they follow the book in terms of who comes out the other side. I was surprised to see Spider show up in this, for example, even if his evolution and end was much more satisfying here. I won't say anything about who's in the next book yet just in case, aside from...

...this side note. It was a good idea to include River's grandfather briefly in this series and not just for setting the table. I suspect that was part of pitching and getting a two season renewal so they could film with Pryce all at once. He is quite central to the next book. That might have been obvious--you don't bring in Pryce to shoot one scene in a six episode series, after all.

Also interesting to see Diana's game tipped here. It ties her to Judd a little earlier than in the books, but again sets up things that I don't think Herron had mapped out when he wrote the first few. And it works beautifully, dovetails nicely into the plot from this novel. (It's kind of delicious to see those little details and both appreciate the setting up and wonder how they'll play out going forward.)
